The Wanderer Catholic Weekly Print Newspaper
As lead Layout Designer and primary Copy Editor, I executed 100% of layout design for 16 pages of 11" x 17" print newspaper using Adobe InDesign and was responsible for major copy editing and final proofreading. I completed over 80 issues.
Presented below are a selection of key aspects of my layout design work. Tap arrows for details:
Bringing meaning to the front page photo feature
When I started as editorial layout designer at The Wanderer, the front page photo feature was typically a church photo which was isolated and usually selected at random.
I took the initiative to further connect the newspaper to the Catholic Faith in a subtle yet thoughtful way, that adhered to the overall style and layout of the legacy front page.
The photos I began to seek were churches and art that related to the solemnities and feasts near to the publication date. Also, I would use the front photo as an enticement to an interior story, or to foster a connection with a particular parish community who would spread the news of The Wanderer when I notified parish communications leaders that their church made it to the front page.
Additionally, I wrote captions front page photos which frequently involved first looking into a broad history of the subject, and then distilling that into 2 – 3 sentences as a succinct yet captivating summary to invite readers to find out more.
Process of image selection/editing/formatting
Here are examples of sourcing images to complement both the content and page layout. This involved using Adobe Photoshop to edit and format images for print.
Layout considerations were made for fold in hardcopy newspaper, transition of text, and readability.
Selection involved finding public domain images, or securing documentation of reprinting rights along with proper credit and permission to edit as needed.
Researching and writing of feature article
I had already visited the Carmelite Monastery before they unveiled plans to build a new chapel. Following an invitation from the prior, Fr. John Mary Burns, I was able to tour the in-progress chapel.
Later, I interviewed and conversed at length with the prior, Fr. John Mary Burns, to learn about the history of the Carmelite order and how the conception of the chapel came about in order to write the article.

Developing relationships with advertisers
I developed relationships with the advertisers, most notably — Ignatius Press and Cross Catholic International — which involved frequent email and phone communication with design staff as we worked together for proofreading and editing of their ad copy and artwork.
Section A: Choosing and developing contemporary content
The Wanderer newspaper has two sections: Section A features articles regarding contemporary news items related to the Catholic Church of today.
It was vital to select articles that were in line with the orthodox and politically conservative ethos of The Wanderer, challenged particular policies and actions, yet demonstrated respect for the Office of the Pope and Catholic leadership.
Key challenges: Selecting articles that were relevant and timely to readers who have access to instantaneous news media.
Section B: Choosing and developing catechetical content
The Wanderer newspaper has two sections: Section B features articles, essays, and catechesis that delve into historical and personal experiences of the Catholic Faith.
As with the A Section, it was vital to select stories that were in line with the ethos of The Wanderer.
Key challenges: Being nimble with editing style as some articles followed AP style while others in the B Section followed an academic or theological style.
